Just potty-trained my toddler

Potty training is not easy. To some, it’s even traumatic. But this way of potty-training, which I want to share with you, is pretty much painless. When my toddler was 18 months, I bought her a cute portable toilet seat on Amazon, and placed it next to our toilet seat. Initially, there was a lot of hype. After all, the toilet seat flushed and applauded on command. She would use it as she pleased but not consistently. Recently, I took the opportunity to explain to her why it was most beneficial to her that she begin to use the toilet regularly and stop using diapers once and for all. You may be wondering, which opportunity?

It happens to the best of us parents. No matter how diligent a parent can be, toddlers get an occasional diaper burn. But this one was so bad that she cried in the shower for about an hour. I spoke to her (She is now almost 3 years old.) and told her that if she didn’t want any more burns, she had to commit to using the toilet. She agreed. Even though at some point she said she wanted to go back to diapers, I reminded her of the burn and we kept our ground.

This is my easy 3-step tutorial on potty training.

  1. Don’t wait until you are ready to potty-train in order to purchase a child portable potty. I bought this one for my little girl because it was fun and it fit compactly next to ours, but there are many options out there. This will allow your child to become familiar with the toilet over time, even months.
  2. Get them cute underpants and remind them to keep them clean and dry.
  3. Take your child to the bathroom every time you have to go. I invite my child to go with me as if it were a play date. “Come on, let’s go together!”
  4. Set an alarm to take them once or twice in the middle of the night. This will teach them to not have accidents in bed.
  5. My older girls loved this book so much and it really encouraged them to stop using diapers. They also have it for boys.

I hope this article helps you, since after potty-training five children this was by far one of the easiest ones.
